My Weekly Meal: Misty + Mexican

NOTE: As a woman who gets paid to brand and rebrand, I decided (the other morning in the car without a sip of coffee, so this could be good or bad idea) to rebrand this blog a bit and institute a weekly post : My Weekly Meal. Each post will highlight a great meal I ate that week, whether it’s at home or out and about in the world. Just go with it, and I promise to post weekly. Mkay. Let’s get started.

“I’m gonna eat some Ramen or maybe that turkey sandwich for dinner tonight.” I said, out the blue. We were at Dillard University waiting for the fantastic Misty Copeland, ballerina soloist with the American Ballet Theater, to speak about her life and her desire to make sure every brown girl in the world knows her greatness. I’ve been a huge fan of Misty since she came on the ballet scene because:

1. I used to be a brown ballerina.

2. Her ability to tune out the haters and naysayers is admirable.

Misty and I being cool. I wore a bun and stretched in case she wanted to see my ballet skills.

“Well, I’m cooking something tonight.” Shandy replied. I gave her the “A LARGE?! YOU GOT MONEEEEEY” girl face.

“What you cooking? Wait. Don’t tell me. I wanna be surprised.” I said, after thanking God for Shandy and her cooking skills. If you’ve been reading this blog, you know that Shandy can tear down in the kitchen. In fact, every meal that I’ve ever devoured from Shandy has been amazing. So, my joy for a new meal was spilling over, and combined with my excitement re: meeting Misty, I was a jumping Mexican bean.

And this was my reaction to the meal Shandy cooked. I’m giving Spike Lee a run for his money.

IMG_4753

She recreated a dish that Chili’s serves, starting with black beans then adding Mexican rice, a fresh and tender chicken breast, tomatoes, cheese, sour cream and fresh jalepenos. I won’t say anymore except I cleaned my plate. Like, finger swiping the plate to get every last bite and drip of black beans. I’ve already tried to turn this into a breakfast, lunch and dinner meal.

IMG_1406

When the meal was over, I settled on the sofa with Misty’s new book in hand and relished in the delight of a good, graceful night. Enjoy this video of Misty being a boss in an Under Armour commercial, because ballet is a sport (despite what stupid boys say.)

Young Forever: Angie Turns 25

Yes, it’s been a minute since my last post.

No, we don’t have to do this.

Let’s just get into and discuss the time I turned 25 on October 18,2014.

It wasn’t as bad as the world would make it out to be. I always looked forward to my 25th birthday as it was the age I thought I would have my first book published and working from my house, being a fly writer. I would also have a boyfriend who adored the heck out of me and I’d be 60 pounds lighter.

No published book.

No working from home.

No adored boyfriend.

No lighter than before.

But at 25, in real life, I’m still working on my book, and this one might actually be the one. I’m in a new job at my alma mater, doing what I love to do: write. I’m still single but am finally in a place where I think I can talk to a person of the opposite sex without saying things like, “I was pressured into getting your phone number.” And the 60 pounds? Well, I’m working on that.

I don’t feel any different, a week removed from my 25th birthday. I do feel a bit more secure in myself. I feel freer than before. I feel more real.

Thus, the theme of my 25th year, #Trillest25.

Bun B’s (The Father of Trill) Definition

“Being trill really just means being true to who you are.”

My 25th birthday was the realest one to date.IMG_2011

And what better way to bring in the realest birthday than with a party…with food…and champagne. With the help of Shandy and her perfect cooking skills through Brown Butter Kitchen, her new catering company, the Young Forever Party came to life. She took my favorite foods from my childhood and made them grown up. And a bonus: my parents took me to Commander’s Palace for brunch, something I’ve dreamed of doing since I was a little girl. In year 25, real dreams are coming true.

The birthday girl!

Bomb Diggity BBQ

Y’all. We made it to July. That means a few things:

1. It’s about to get even hotter in the NOLA.

2. Only 12 more days until On the Run Tour in NOLA.

3. IT’S WHITNEY’S BIRTHDAY MONTH.

And to celebrate my bestest best friend’s day of birth (July 4!), Shandy and I decided to throw her, what I so eloquently called a “Bomb Diggity BBQ.” Don’t ask why, it was the first thing I came up with when I sent the mass text to all of our friends. And because Shandy is involved, you know the food was AMAZING and everything was EXTRA FANCY because she is the hostess with the mostest.

The party planning began with a trip to the grocery store in which I danced in the produce section to “One Night Only” by the Dreamgirls because it played while I searched for limes for my Carefree Summer Sangria. Then we headed home for a night of peeling potatoes (my grandmother would be so proud), deveining shrimp, cutting onions, making sangria and watching the almost boring movie, Ride Along.

At the stoke of midnight, Shandy, Linda (our Muses barbie doll) and I ran upstairs to sing a joyful version of the Miyako birthday song to Whitney. And because we were just pooped, we went to sleep with a somewhat clean kitchen, only to wake up and get to work.

And by get to work, that meant Shandy trying out the not-so-fancy community grill at The Burg. Donned in a blue bandana and lots of matches, it was girl vs. grill out there and Shandy WON. The chicken had a perfect smoky taste intertwined within and it went so well with the baked beans, corn on the cob and my personal potato salad. I was SO NERVOUS people were going to hate my potato salad because y’all know how black people are about potato salad. it’s a serious thing.

Another special moment of the Bomb Diggity BBQ (aside from playing Hip-Hop Dance Experience and dancing to all things ratchet), was Shandy’s made to order beef and shrimp burgers. All I have to say: WATCH OUT COMPANY BURGER. Shandy is like the Bubba Gump of Burgers and was grilling them thangs with onions and bacon, and the shrimp burgers for our resident pescetarian birthday girl, were a perfect Pinterest experiment gone GREAT.

I hope we threw a great party for my bestie because she deserves it and she’s 25. We must all go over the ant hill in a good way.

I leave with some special words from the motherland:

Outdoor Drinking: Carefree Black Girl Style

The moment when you’re sitting on the steps of your apartment or on patio furniture with your sunglasses on and the condensation from your glass drips on your bare thigh because you’re free in your sundress…that’s the moment where happiness lives. Outdoor drinking is truly one of my favorite hobbies and it’s one of the few things I can do very well.

One of my favorite things to drink outside is a fresh and fruity sangria. And guess who happens to be an expert at making the best sangria?

This gal here.

IMG_9613

Me. Day drinking outside. See? I told you I do this well.

I first made my “Carefree Summer Sangria” (I actually just came up with that name, I’m so clever) for my parents’ 60th birthday party and it was a HIT! I’ve changed my recipe, but the feeling of drinking a glass of my citrus and peach sangria remains the same. So, for all those who’d like to take a chance at making it for your summer party, here’s the recipe!

My sangria!

My sangria!

Carefree Summer Sangria

– one large bottle of Yellow Tail Pinot Grigio

– two oranges

– one lime

– two cans of sliced peaches (juice included)

– one bottle of white grape juice

– 1/2 can of Sanpellegrino Sparkling orange drink

– A splash (or if you’re down for having a little fun, MORE) of rum or brandy

– sugar
Add in order:

1. wine, peaches (with juice) and white grape juice

2. oranges and limes

3. sugar (to taste)
4. rum or brandy
5. Sanpellegrino prior to serving
STIR and SERVE and TWERK. And listen to the official Carefree Black Girl Playlist for the summer here while sipping and takin’ over for the 99 and the 2000.

Cheers!

P.S. This week was exceptionally exciting for me because

1. I’m going to NYC this weekend for a PRSA conference!

2. I was featured on the fabulous A Little Happy lifestyle blog in the first “New Orleans Ladies” series! The amazing Dominique Ellis captured all my fabulousness in this one photo that I cannot stop looking at! Click here to check out my post!

Gracious Grub

Today was one of those “I look/feel too good to go home” kinds of days. I was frolicking around Uptown in my new favorite Tiffany Blue dress from Forever 21 and looked like a sight to behold. My braids were doing something fabulous. My blush sparkled in the sunshine. The color I got on my nails brings me all the joy in the world. My car didn’t make that strange squeaking noise. Frankly, I was feeling good and I haven’t felt like that in a while. And it doesn’t help that a fellow black queen, My First Lady, had some beautiful things to say about Queen Maya Angelou and it just made me feel all beautiful and powerful inside.

Trillmobile selfies are the best selfies.

And as I’m driving, with Chrisette Michele playing, my stomach grumbled for something strong and something savory, and I remember seeing a photo of an almond croissant from this new bakery with a really pretty serif G as its logo. (You know I live for good, clean branding.) So, I asked Siri for directions to “Gracious Bakery” and he (I changed it to the man voice so I can feel like I run the world by giving the man orders. don’t ask) led to the perfect place.

I walked in and immediately ordered a coffee and the almond croissant. The lovely girl behind the counter sadly told me they were sold out and before I had a fit, I found the savory brioche and said “give me one of those doohinkeys.” Yes, I really say that and you people wonder why I’m still single. I took my brunch (if I call it brunch, it will make me think this is a brunch situation just without the mimosa) and found a table outside and bit into that damn brioche and got.my.life. And the coffee, a New Orleans cold-drip iced coffee, was perfectly strong and sweet in all the right places.

Oh, that sounds bad.

IMG_0070

Something strong and something savory.

But that coffee was perfect. I also got a chocolate croissant to go and bit into before I got home. I was immediately sent back to my first day in Paris when I bought the same pastry and fell hard in love.

So, if you’re looking for a quiet Mid-City place with fancy French pastries and according to one of my twitter friends, a really addictive meatloaf sandwich, head over to Gracious Bakery on S. Jeff Davis (right across the street from Fox 8-WVUE and Xavier University).

Bon appétit!

Angie

Game Night at The Burg

I’m sorry.

This is how I feel about not having the time to write a blog post.

This is how I feel about not having the time to write a blog post.

It’s been months since my last post and frankly, I’m sorry. Between the job, writing, not getting into grad school, paying student loans, cutting my hair off, getting braids AND trying to stay fly in the meantime, I just didn’t have the time or energy to dedicate to this precious little blog I started a year ago.

So, here’s the good news, this post is fun. It’s all about our first Game Night at The Burg. It all came about when we wanted to play Taboo and then next thing we knew, we had pizza and sliders and peach mint tea and spinach dip and Starbursts.

It was a great night of fun and dancing, as we never got to Taboo because we were so consumed with Rock Band and Hip Hop Dance Moves. The best part of the whole night (which I found remarkable): we didn’t consume one drop of liquor.

Check out the pics of the fun we had and stay tuned for more posts…when I feel like it🙂

Smooches,

Brunch in Love

It’s been months since I’ve sat my butt in someone’s brunch spot. I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s my inability to wake up at a decent hour on the weekends. A sistah is just tired, y’all. But yesterday, after three hours of sitting with foil in my hair (I went blonde…again!), so much foil I could have gotten those channels we refuse to pay $20 for, I met Shandy for brunch at Biscuits & Buns on Banks.

This place, a refurbished NOLA shotgun house, is perfect in every sense of the word. The service was perfect, the decor (which contained chalkboard numbered tables…we were at table 4- shout out to Queen Bey), the FOOD. Bruh, the food.  As I’m walking down the street to the restaurant, I say a quick prayer to the Most High that they serve chicken and waffles. I get in there, check out the menu…BOOM, chicken and waffles. Ain’t He awesome?

There was a precious coffee mug on the table with the restaurant’s logo on it: an ampersand with a graphic of a spoon and a fork interlinked into it. I got a coffee just because of the mug. Then I bought the mug. After gushing to the waitress about how much we loved B&B on B (ain’t that cute? I just made that up!), we discovered that we pay our bill using an iPad and it was the cutest, most effective method! No waiting for the check, then waiting for them to come back. Sistah Girl swiped Shandy’s card (FYI, she treated me to brunch and I ain’t eeem know it til she said, “I got it!” she’s the best!) and boom, we were done.

If you’re looking for a new brunch spot, pray for patience as you tackle Banks Street (it’s a mess right now) and head over to Biscuits and Buns on Banks and GET YOUR LIFE.

Wishing you all a happy holiday season. That's me giving serious face in 1st grade for the sake of Christmas.

Lick My Persuasion

“How many of you think love is the most complicated sh– ever?” – Rihanna, during her show in NOLA.

I made a decision when I turned 23 (and started making real big girl money) that I wouldn’t spend my money on material things, but on experiences. So, yeah, that’s why I paid $10 to get into King of Diamonds, and that’s why I spent money to fly to Upstate NY and ring in 2013 with some of my favorite friends. And that’s why I shelled out more than $100 to spend 4.5 hours with my best friend while we twerked our way through Rihanna’s surprisingly amazing performance last Friday in NOLA. I don’t usually go to concerts of artists I just like…it’s usually people I LOVE (hence Beyonce, Jay Z, Justin Timberlake, Kendrick Lamar, etc.) But Whitney wanted to go for her birthday and I made it happen.

Long story short, I had the time of my life and thought Rihanna was comfortable on stage, absolutely gorgeous, managed to stay on-key and hit her dance moves perfectly. From a PR professional’s perspective, I think world tours are not only for established fans but for fans that may be on the fence about an artist’s abilities. She can count me in as an established fan now🙂

After the show, Whitney and I were STARVING. And of course, there’s nothing better to eat at 12:30 a.m. than Taco Bell. I know this is a food blog dedicated to food that is classy and real. Well, today (and most of the time in my life), Taco Bell is classy and real. I ordered a chalupa with chicken and Whit got a crunch wrap supreme. And I don’t know if it was the hunger thing or the late night thing, but that was the best tasting chalupa I’ve ever had. We ended the night on a great and full not.

Two things one would not consider classy became classy in my book Friday night.

Enjoy the pics and let me know…what’s your favorite Rihanna song?

IMG_7702

Because it was a Rihanna concert, I had to dress the part. Bandana, red lipstick (Ruby Woo with the Rih Rih Woo liner, WOO!) and leather were required attire.

The Makings of a Good Idea: Anniversary Version

Fun fact guys…Meals with Angie turns 1 this month. How about them apples?! This might be the longest commitment I’ve had since my blonde highlights (rimshot).  In fact, I did a post about Shandy’s 25th birthday brunch and as we sit on the sofa, I’m like, “GIRL. IT’S BEEN A YEAR!” And because it’s the blog’s birthday and my homegirl Shandy’s birthday today, here’s a post dedicated to all the Libras in the hiz-ouse!

Last night, we headed to Domenica, John Besh’s fabulous Italian spot in the legendary Roosevelt Hotel for happy hour and Shandy’s pre-birthday celebration. I’ve lived in New Orleans my whole life and never been inside of The Roosevelt. There was that time, when the Saints won the Superbowl and we thought someone was shooting on Canal. Someone told me to run and I ran like Sonic the Hedgehog down the street and figured The Roosevelt was a safe spot. So, it was nice to go there with good intentions, ya know!

We all ordered mango and peach bellinis and with one sip, I felt like I woke up on a Sunday midmorning. Carlyn exclaimed that if a “good idea” had a taste, it would taste like that bellini. Pizzas were on deck (they’re half off for happy hour!!) and I devoured the half pepperoni and half spicy lamb meatball with broccoli and ricotta. They were not playing when they said “SPICY” lamb meatballs. I mean, it’s like spice simmering on the side of your mouth. But it was fabulous!! The restaurant was beautiful, simply decorated and definitely a cute date spot (for all those participating in the Cuffing Season, I’ll pass on that this year, THANKS -_-).

Peep the photos below and everyone go wish my girl Shandy a happy birthday!! She made it over the ant hill y’all!

Grown Woman

I have no excuse...trust me.

I have no excuse…trust me.

The last three months of my life have been what one would call a “roller coaster.” I saw Beyonce perform (haven’t seen her live since 2007); held my grandmother’s hand for the last time; moved into a beautiful apartment; went to Miami where I went jet skiing, watched strippers, jammed to Justin Timberlake and Jay Z in the heat; sat in my Beetle in the heat and wished it would start again, then bought a RAV4 (my other dream car) the next day.

So, in a nutshell, I grew up really quick and had fun doing it. And during that time, let me tell you, I ate well (and drank well!) Because a picture is worth a thousand words, I’ll share with you some of my favorite meals, people and moments of my summer!

So, one time, Brandi, Whit and I went to Neyow's and got some chargrilled oysters. I almost lost my mind.
